Counter Narratives for countering violent extremism logo

The CVE Centre has been working hard to deliver a number of important initiatives with our domestic and international partners, including the recently released counter narrative compendium.

Launched by the Hon Michael Keenan MP, Minister for Justice, A How To Guide: Undermining Violent Extremist Narratives in South East Asia is one of the agreed outcomes from Australia's Regional Summit to Counter Violent Extremism, held in June last year.

Supported by the Australian Government and led by Hedayah, the compendium provides practical guidance and insights for governments, policy makers and civil society organisations in Australia and South East Asia to support their development of effective counter narratives that undercut the appeal of terrorist propaganda.

The content was developed in March this year when practitioners, academics and government experts from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam attended a workshop in Semarang, Indonesia. Information about existing counter narrative projects, best practice across the region and challenges for the future were drawn on to create this valuable resource.

The compendium will help countries across the region develop their own counter narratives, and create alternative, positive messages that will reach and influence their local audiences.

A copy of A How To Guide: Undermining Violent Extremist Narratives in South East Asia is available from the Hedayah website.

Hedayah is the International Center of Excellence for Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It is an international, independent, apolitical, non-ideological think-and-do tank focused on dialogue and communication, capacity-building and research, and analysis to prevent and counter violent extremism in all its forms.
